Question
Can you print pantone colors?
Answer
4OVER4 prints through a four-color CMYK process rather than with Pantone spot inks, so Pantone (PMS) colors are converted to their nearest CMYK equivalents. We cannot match PMS colors exactly in CMYK, so some spot colors will look close but not identical to a Pantone swatch. Check your color values before sending the file so there are no surprises.
- Expect a close approximation: every color is built by mixing cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, which can differ from the pure Pantone ink.
- Convert PMS to CMYK yourself: doing the conversion in your design app lets you preview and fine-tune each color.
- Some Pantones shift more: bright oranges, greens, certain blues, and metallic Pantone colors are the hardest to reproduce in process color.
- Order a proof for brand colors: if a logo color must be exact, a hard-copy proof lets you compare the actual printed colors against your reference before committing to the full run.
