Hand Out a Flyer That Catches the Light

Foil flyers, also sold as metallic flyers, catch light where a standard handout stays flat. A foil flyer is not just ink on paper but a full-color flyer with a layer of real metallic foil pressed on top, so a headline, a logo, or a border reads like polished metal and moves as you tilt it. Foil flyers start at $328.42 for 500, rated 4.6 out of 5 across 5 reviews. Whether you are announcing a launch, sending a gala invitation, or tucking a thank-you into a premium package, it makes the piece feel expensive on sight.

Your artwork prints in full color first, then the foil goes on in one of 6 colors, on the front, the back or both, so a plain layout with one foiled headline looks high-end. The metallic, silk and staggered cut flyers sit with the rest of the range on flyers printing; the choices for the foil flyer follow below.

A foil run starts at 500 flyers for $328.42, about 66 cents per flyer, and 8 tiers run up to 25,000. A full run for a launch or a mailer costs far less per flyer than a small test batch. The tiers below give the total at each count.

What Are Foil Flyers

A foil flyer is a card-weight flyer on 16pt silk-laminated or 14pt uncoated cover, printed full color and then pressed with real metallic foil accents, in 4 sizes from 4" x 6" up to 5" x 7". The small sizes and the thick stock put it closer to an invitation than to a street handout, so it goes to product launches, luxury retail, high-end real estate listings, event and gala invitations, restaurant menu inserts, and premium package thank-yous. The foil and the heavy stock make people hold on to it instead of skimming it and tossing it. If you want the metallic look across the whole design rather than as an accent, the Metallic Flyers cover that, and the foil flyer is the version with pressed foil detail.

Metallic foil colors for flyers

Six foil colors are pressed onto the printed sheet, gold, silver and copper among them, on the front, the back or both sides. Foil is a metal film rather than an ink, so it reflects instead of printing, and it reads differently depending on what sits underneath and around it.

  • Gold: the warm read, for gala invitations, anniversaries and anything that should feel formal before it is read.
  • Silver: the highest contrast against a dark background, which is why fine rules, small type and thin logo strokes hold best in silver on a black or navy field.
  • Copper: deeper and warmer than gold, the usual pick for food, spirits and craft brands.

Whichever color you choose, set it against a dark or saturated background rather than white paper, because foil shows itself by contrast with what surrounds it.

What Size Should a Foil Flyer Be

All 4 sizes sit in postcard range, so the choice is about how much foil and text the front has to carry. The 4" x 6" default is the everyday handout, small enough to pass out at scale. The 4.25" x 5.5" and 4.25" x 6" add a little height for a menu insert or a longer headline. The 5" x 7" gives the design and its foil the most room, and it doubles as an upscale invitation. The chart below lists the 4 sizes, both stocks and every ink option. For a smooth silk feel across the whole flyer without the pressed foil, the Silk Flyers are the closer match.

How to supply the foil layer

Build the foil as its own layer in the file, named FOIL, drawn in 100 percent K only, sitting exactly over the artwork it covers. Keep every foil element solid: no gradients, no drop shadows, no soft or feathered edges and no tints, because foil either lands or it does not. Keep strokes and type heavy enough to stand on their own rather than hairline thin, and leave a little space between separate foil elements so they do not read as one blob once they are shining.

Put the foil where it counts

Foil reads best as an accent. Press it onto a logo, a headline, a border, or a single icon, in gold, silver, copper, or one of the other 6 colors, and let the full-color art carry the rest. You choose whether the shine goes on the front, the back, or both sides, so a two-sided flyer can lead with foil up front and keep details clean on the back.

Layer spot UV over the foil

Spot UV gloss is a separate finish from the foil, added to the front, the back, or both sides. It lays a clear raised sheen over the areas you pick, so you can pair metallic foil with a glossy highlight on the same flyer, one shiny and one wet-looking, for real depth in the hand.

Design it without a designer

Start from a free layout in our flyer design templates and change the colors, copy, and logo in the online editor. On a 4" x 6" foil flyer, give the foil one bold element, a headline or a logo, so the shine has one clear job.

If your artwork is finished, skip the editor and download a press-ready blank. The blank foil flyer template is built at the real trim size with the bleed and safe margin already drawn in, so your design stays clear of the cut. Place your art, mark where the foil should go on its own FOIL layer, and upload.

Can You See a Proof Before Printing

Yes, and on a foil job it is worth doing. You choose between sending your file straight to production or requesting a free online proof, a digital preview you approve before the press runs. Because foil placement and trim matter more here than on a plain flyer, the proof lets you confirm the shine lands exactly where you want it. Every order is also backed by the 4OVER4.COM guarantees, and you can read the details on our guarantees page.

How Fast Can You Get Foil Flyers

Foil flyers take 9 business days, the one production speed this flyer offers. The full-color print comes first, then the metallic foil and any spot UV go on as added finishes, so count the 9 business days back from a launch or event date before you order. The production schedule shows in the order panel once you set size, foil, and finish.

When a Metallic Flyer Earns Its Place

A metallic flyer costs more per sheet than a plain one, so it belongs where the flyer is the product, not the wrapper. At 500 the foil run works out at about 66 cents a flyer, and by 15,000 it falls close to 22 cents, which puts it in reach for a product launch, a gala or a real estate listing where each sheet goes to one person who matters. It does not belong in a door to door drop or a bulk street handout, where a plain flyer from the Flyers range does the same job for less. Use the 5" x 7" for an invitation that has to feel like an event, and the 4" x 6" default for a menu insert or a package thank you. Put the foil on one element, a logo, a headline or a border, and let the 16pt silk laminated stock do the rest.

Foil Flyers: Frequently Asked Questions

How many foil flyers do I have to order?

Runs start at 500 for $328.42. The per-flyer price slides from about 66 cents down toward 22 cents as the count climbs to 25,000.

What sizes are foil flyers printed at?

Four sizes, from a 4 by 6 inch default up to 5 by 7 inches. They sit in handout and mailer territory rather than the larger sheet sizes used for posted flyers.

Which foil colors can I use?

Six, including gold, silver and copper. The foil is pressed onto the front, the back, or both sides, and you set that in the configurator alongside the color.

Is spot UV the same thing as foil?

No, they are two separate finishes and you can order either or both. Spot UV lays a gloss varnish on chosen areas, while foil presses actual metallic material onto the sheet. Both sit over full-color 4/0, 4/1 or 4/4 printing.

What stock are they printed on?

A 16pt silk-laminated cover or a 14pt uncoated cover. Both are cover weights rather than text weights, which is what gives a foil flyer the stiffness of a card in the hand.

How long do foil flyers take to produce?

Nine business days is the standard turnaround, since the foil is a separate stamping step after printing. A free online proof option is available before the run starts.

Is foil printing expensive?

It costs more than plain ink because real metallic foil is pressed onto each sheet after printing, and the price falls with the run. Foil flyers start at $328.42 for 500, about 66 cents a flyer, drop to $1,196.14 for 5,000, and reach $3,283.04 for 15,000, close to 22 cents each. The foil comes in 6 colors on the front, the back or both sides.

What's the difference between a poster and a flyer?

A flyer is a small sheet meant to be handed out or mailed, on this product 4" x 6" up to 5" x 7" on 16pt silk laminated or 14pt uncoated cover, printed in runs of 500 or more. A poster is a single large sheet meant to be read from a distance on a wall. Foil suits the flyer because it is read up close in the hand, where the shine shows.

How much do 5000 flyers cost?

A run of 5,000 foil flyers is $1,196.14 on this product, and 2,500 is $822.68. That is the pressed foil version in the default 4" x 6" size, with the total moving as you add a larger size, spot UV or two sided printing in the configurator. The run prints on a 9 business day standard turnaround.
