Which way should the design face?
4OVER4 clear window clings mount on the inside of the glass, and you choose the print direction. Reverse Print faces the design out toward the street, and Regular Print faces it in toward the room. You can also send your file straight to production or request a free online proof first.
Because a clear cling goes on the inside of the glass, the print direction decides who reads it. Choose Reverse Print and the artwork faces outward, so people on the sidewalk see it the right way round through the window. Choose Regular Print and it faces inward for people inside the space. It is a small setting that saves you from a mirrored, backwards sign. How to Apply a Window Cling in Four Steps
Settle the facing question above first, because that is the one thing this process cannot undo. Then give yourself ten minutes and a clean pane.
- Clean the glass and let it dry. Static needs a smooth, dry surface. Dust, grease and old tape residue are what cause a cling to lift at a corner two days later, so wash the pane, dry it fully and do not apply to glass that is still cold and damp from outside.
- Position before you commit. Hold the cling up, step back and check it from where customers actually stand, since a design that looks centered from inside can sit behind a mullion from the sidewalk. Tack the top edge first and let the rest hang.
- Squeegee from the center outward. Press the middle to the glass and work toward the edges in overlapping strokes, using a squeegee, a plastic card or a folded cloth. Working outward is what pushes air ahead of you instead of trapping it.
- Push any trapped air to the nearest edge. Lift the closest corner, let the bubble out and press the film back down rather than trying to force air across the whole panel. Large bubbles come out easier than small ones, so deal with them while they are still big.
To store it for next season, peel it off slowly from a corner, put it back on the backing sheet it arrived on and keep it flat, out of direct sun and away from heat. Flat matters more than anything else: a cling left creased or rolled tight holds that shape and never sits perfectly on glass again. Stored properly, the same cling goes back up next year, which is the whole economic argument for static film over anything with glue.
