Question
What paper thickness works best for debossing?
Answer
Debossing needs a stock with enough body to hold a deep, clean impression, so heavier papers give the best results. Thin sheets tend to warp or tear under the pressure of the die.
| Stock weight | Debossing result |
|---|---|
| 32pt | Deepest, crispest impressions with plenty of body |
| 24pt | Strong, clean impressions for most designs |
| Lighter stocks | Risk of warping or tearing under die pressure |
- Go heavier for depth: the thicker the stock, the more pronounced the impression
- Flag thin stocks early: a prepress review can catch a stock that is too light before it reaches production
If your design leans on the debossed effect, choose the heaviest stock that fits your budget. It is the single biggest factor in how good the finish looks.
