Question
What is trapping in prepress?
Answer
Trapping slightly overlaps adjacent colors so that tiny registration shifts on press do not leave thin white gaps between them. It is a prepress adjustment that is nearly invisible in the finished piece but prevents an obvious defect.
- Creates a small overlap where two different colors meet.
- Hides the white slivers that appear if plates shift even slightly.
- Handled during prepress, so designers rarely apply it by hand.
- Most noticeable on jobs with bold color edges and fine detail.
