Question
How do I create a scratch-off effect on my cards?
Answer
A scratch-off effect is created with a separate mask file that tells the press exactly where to lay the scratch-off material. Build that mask in a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator and fill the scratch area with 100% black (K).
To prepare a scratch-off job:
- Design your full-color artwork as one file
- Create a second mask file, using solid 100% K to mark each scratch-off area
- If the hidden area uses variable data, such as unique codes, supply an Excel file with all of the values
Because the scratch-off layer is applied on a separate machine, plan for small print shifts of up to 1/16" and keep important elements clear of the very edge of the scratch area.
