Question
What is digital printing and how is it different from offset?
Answer
Both methods put ink or toner on paper, but they get there differently, and each shines at a different scale. Offset presses use metal plates to transfer ink onto a rubber blanket that then presses the image onto paper, while digital printing sends your file straight to the press with no plates or manual setup.
| Digital | Offset | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | No plates, file to press | Custom metal plates |
| Best run size | Small to mid runs | Large runs, roughly 500 and up |
| Color | CMYK simulation | Accurate Pantone spot colors |
| Customization | Easy per-piece changes | Fixed once plates are made |
- Choose digital for short runs, fast turnaround, and personalized pieces.
- Choose offset for very large quantities and jobs where exact color consistency is critical.
