Question
Can I get an exact Pantone color match with CMYK printing?
Answer
Not exactly. CMYK builds every color from tiny dots of four process inks, while Pantone (PMS) colors are pre-mixed single inks, so the two systems cover different ranges of color. Most Pantone values convert closely enough that the shift is hard to spot, but a true one-to-one match is not something four-color process can guarantee.
- Why the shift happens: CMYK has a narrower color gamut than the Pantone library, so saturated or unusual hues get pulled toward the nearest printable value.
- What converts well: muted tones, most blues, browns, and grays usually land within an acceptable range, especially on coated stock.
- What struggles: bright oranges, vivid greens, deep purples, and any metallic or neon ink fall outside CMYK entirely.
- For an exact match: run the actual Pantone spot ink on press instead of converting, which keeps brand colors consistent across every reprint.
When color accuracy is critical, always approve against a printed proof rather than your monitor.
