What Size Should a Hang Tag Be?

Rules of thumb by category: clothing wants string or a barb, homeware and bags want ball chain, and food gifts want an elastic loop or string, because nothing sharp should sit next to something edible. If the tag will be reused as a bookmark or a keepsake, spend the extra on the ribbon, since that is the part people touch.

A heavier or textured stock gives a small tag real presence in the hand. Kraft and Recycled Stocks

There are 20 stocks on this product, and the natural, unbleached look most people mean when they say kraft comes from the uncoated end of that list. An uncoated sheet has no gloss layer over the fiber, so it feels like paper instead of packaging, it takes a pen or a rubber stamp without smearing, and it photographs the way small brands want their product photographed.

Ink behaves differently there. On a coated stock the color sits on the surface and stays saturated. On an uncoated or brown sheet the ink sinks into the fiber, so everything reads a shade quieter and a deep block of color reads softer than it looks on screen. Design for that: line art, single color logos and type hold up beautifully, while a photographic gradient does not.

White ink is the answer on a brown sheet, because ordinary CMYK has no white to print with, so any part of your design meant to be white simply shows as brown. A white layer is what makes a logo read cleanly on kraft rather than disappearing into it.

Can You Print on Both Sides of a Hang Tag?
