How accurate is cutting and die-cutting on printed products?

Cutting and die-cutting are precise but not perfectly exact. Industry standard tolerances allow the blade to shift by up to 1/16 of an inch in any direction, so the trim can land slightly off from piece to piece.

To keep that shift from cutting off anything important:

• Design with the safe zone built into 4OVER4 templates, which reserve margin for this movement
• Keep text, logos, and key graphics away from the trim edge
• Extend backgrounds into the bleed so no white slivers appear
• Avoid borders that sit right at the trim, since a full-bleed border can look uneven if the cut shifts
• If you have strict size requirements, build the tolerance into your design
• Review your proof carefully and flag any border concerns before authorizing production

Designing with these margins in mind means minor cutting variation stays invisible in the finished product.
