A hard copy proof is a physical printed sample mailed to you so you can judge color, finish, and layout on the actual stock before the full run prints. It is the closest preview to the finished piece, because you are holding the real material in your hands.

• Useful for complex or specialty jobs, where finishes and folds are easier to check in person.
• Adds time and cost compared with a free on-screen proof, since the sample is produced and shipped.

For everyday jobs an on-screen digital proof is usually enough. Save the printed proof for pieces where seeing the exact result before the run is worth the extra step.
