Question

Can 4OVER4 match a specific Pantone color when printing CMYK?

Answer

Standard printing at 4OVER4 uses the four-color CMYK process, which reproduces Pantone (PMS) colors as closely as CMYK allows. Because PMS inks and CMYK are built on different color systems, an exact match cannot be guaranteed, but the result is usually very close. Keep in mind that production prints the color values saved in your file as-is, without adjusting or correcting them toward a separate Pantone target, so accurate color starts with how the artwork is built.

  • CMYK conversion is the default and gets most brand colors into an acceptable range.
  • Build your file in CMYK: set the document color mode to CMYK and apply the CMYK breakdown to any Pantone spot colors in your design software, defining elements with exact CMYK percentages rather than RGB, which shifts when it converts.
  • Spot or Pantone ink options are available on certain products for tighter, more consistent color matching.
  • Bright, saturated brand colors such as vivid oranges, greens, and blues are the hardest for CMYK to hit and benefit most from a spot ink.
  • Expect screen-to-print variance: monitors are backlit RGB, so colors often look brighter on screen than on paper. When exact, repeatable color is critical, run a small test quantity before committing to a large order.
  • Share your exact PMS values with 4OVER4 support and they can advise which option fits your product.

Options can vary by product and may change, so confirm the latest details on the product page or with 4OVER4 support.
