Question
What do I need to know about Spot UV on business cards?
Answer
Spot UV needs a second file that tells the press exactly where the glossy coating goes. This is a Black Mask file, and it is processed separately from your main color artwork.
- Upload a separate Black Mask file alongside your standard design file.
- In the mask, use 100% black (K) to mark every area that should receive the Spot UV effect. Leave the rest white.
- Match the mask exactly to the position of the elements you want glossed on the main file.
- Keep both files the same trim size and orientation so they register correctly.
Because the two files are handled separately in production, precise alignment between your artwork and the mask is what makes the gloss land where you intend.
