Points, Inches, and What Thick Means on a Quote
Two different measuring systems collide on this topic, and most confused orders start there. Card stock is quoted in points, where a point is one thousandth of an inch of caliper. So 14pt is 0.014 in, 16pt is 0.016 in, 24pt is 0.024 in. It has nothing to do with type sizes and nothing to do with the pound weights printers use for text papers.
Rigid boards abandon points entirely and are quoted in fractions of an inch. Foam core is 3/16 in or 1/2 in. Gatorboard is 3/16 in or 1/2 in. PVC is quoted in millimetres, usually 3mm or 6mm. Put 24pt card next to 3/16 in foam core and the board is nearly eight times thicker, which is why a quote that says thick poster board can mean two prices that are nowhere near each other.
The useful thing to know is how thickness turns into stiffness. Bending resistance rises with the cube of the caliper, so 24pt is roughly five times stiffer than 14pt rather than twice. That cube is also why a small step on a rigid board matters so much: half an inch of foam core against three sixteenths is a jump you feel immediately when you pick the sheet up by one corner. Matching Thickness to the Size and the Span
Thickness is not really a property of the board. It is a property of the board plus how it is held. A 3/16 in sheet clamped in a frame on all four sides will never bow. The same sheet resting on two easel pegs will.
Working rules that hold up in practice:
- Up to 18 by 24 in on an easel: 3/16 in foam core, with room to spare.
- 24 by 36 in on an easel: 3/16 in works if the ledge supports the full bottom edge. On two corner pegs it will visibly curve within an hour.
- 36 by 48 in and larger: 1/2 in foam core, or PVC if the board also has to survive handling.
- Hung from the top edge only: a rigid board is the wrong tool. Print a paper poster and hang it, or frame the board.
- Travels in and out of a case weekly: gatorboard or PVC, because foam core corners will not survive the fourth trip.
Presentation boards and science fair displays deserve a separate note, because they get folded. A single foam core sheet scored into three panels hinges on the paper liner, and that hinge tears after a handful of open-and-close cycles. One more limit worth naming: past 48 by 96 in, rigidity stops being the constraint and shipping takes over. A rigid board cannot be rolled, so it ships flat in a crate and the freight can pass the print cost. How Thick Board Gets Printed, and What to Send Us
There are two ways ink gets onto a rigid board, and they produce different objects. A flatbed press prints directly onto the substrate, so there is no separate paper layer and no laminate edge to peel. Mounting takes a printed sheet and bonds it to the board, which lets you keep a specific paper finish and usually costs less per square foot. File setup is where boards differ from paper. Rigid stock is trimmed on a cutter after printing, and a foam core edge shows a bright white core line if the artwork stops short, so give a full 1/8 in bleed and keep type at least 1/4 in inside the trim. Resolution can be lower than you think: a board read from three feet away is sharp at 150 ppi at final size, and pushing a screen graphic up from 72 ppi will not add detail that was never captured. The trick is the sandwich: two paper faces kept 0.1875 in apart, so bending one would mean stretching the other. How thick is standard poster board?
The poster board sold in craft aisles runs roughly 14pt to 22pt, which is 0.014 to 0.022 in. That is card stock, and it will not stand up on its own past about 11 by 17 in. When a print shop says poster board it usually means 3/16 in foam core, which measures 0.1875 in and is around eight times thicker. Confirm which one a quote refers to before you compare prices, because the two are not close.
Is 24pt card stock thick enough for an easel display?
No, and this is the most common miss. At 0.024 in, 24pt is genuinely rigid in a business card or a hang tag, but a 24 by 36 in sheet of it will bow into a curve the moment it is supported at the bottom edge only. If the piece has to stand, start at 3/16 in foam core. If the piece will be pinned flat to a wall or a foam backing board, card stock is fine and cheaper.
What is the difference between foam core and gatorboard?
Both are sandwich panels with a foam core, and both come in 3/16 in as the standard. The difference is the skin. Foam core uses clay-coated paper, which prints beautifully and dents if you set a corner down hard. Gatorboard uses a wood-fiber veneer, so it resists dents, handles humidity better and stays flatter over months on a wall. Can a thick poster board be used outside?
Not for more than a day, and not in weather. Foam core has paper faces, so rain and even heavy dew wick into the edges, swell the liners and lift them off the foam. Gatorboard lasts longer but is not weatherproof either. For anything that lives outdoors, use PVC rigid plastic, corrugated plastic or aluminum, all of which take moisture without changing shape.
Should I print onto the board or mount a printed poster to it?
Mounting a printed poster to the board gives you the paper surface you chose, matte or gloss, and it is usually the cheaper route per square foot. Printing straight onto the board on a flatbed puts ink on the substrate with no laminate edge that can lift, which matters on a piece that will be handled a lot. For a one-off display that has to look right for a week, mount it. For a board that travels in and out of a case, print it direct.
How do I stop a large board from bowing?
Three things, in order of effect. Step up to 1/2 in foam core past about 36 in on the long side, since the extra separation between the liners does far more than any material change would. Support the whole bottom edge instead of two corners, which is what a proper easel ledge is for. Then store the board standing on edge, never flat under other work, because foam core takes a permanent set in about a week under weight.
