Question
How big are postcards compared to regular paper?
Answer
It helps to picture postcard sizes against a standard 8.5 by 11 inch letter sheet. A 4 by 6 card is roughly a quarter of that page, while larger formats climb toward half or two-thirds of the sheet.
| Postcard size | Compared to a letter sheet |
|---|---|
| 4 x 6 in | About one-quarter of the page |
| 5.5 x 8.5 in | Exactly half the page |
| 6 x 9 in | Roughly two-thirds of the page |
The 6 by 9 format is the largest common option and gives you the most room for imagery and offers.
- Most common: 4 x 6 in, which qualifies for the lower USPS postcard rate when a card is at least 3.5 x 5 in and no larger than 4.25 x 6 in.
- Other popular sizes: 5 x 7 in for invitations and announcements (mailed at letter rates), and 6 x 11 in for maximum impact on promotions.
- Squares: 5 x 5 in and 6 x 6 in suit social-style designs, and custom trim sizes work when a standard size does not fit the layout.
