Formal Invitation Templates and Wording That Follow the Rules
Copy the templates, keep the line breaks, and change the names. Here is what belongs on each of the five lines, which words pair with which venue, and how the wording decides your size and stock.
A formal invitation is five centered lines in a fixed order: who hosts, the request, the names, the date and time, then the place. Use "the honour of your presence" when the ceremony is in a house of worship and "the pleasure of your company" everywhere else. Spell out the date, the year and the hour, leave the street address and ZIP code off the card, and put the reception line, the dress code and the reply instruction below the block or on their own enclosure.

Quick answer
Five lines, in this order, with nothing abbreviated
Host, request, names, date and time, place. That block is the invitation. The request line is set by the venue rather than by taste: a house of worship takes the honour of your presence, everything else takes the pleasure of your company. Numbers are written as words, the year sits alone on a lowercase line, and the street address stays on the details card. Reception, dress code and reply come after the block, one item per line.
The Five Lines Every Formal Invitation Uses
A formal invitation is a fixed structure, not a paragraph. Five lines do the work, in the same order every time, and once you see the order the wording writes itself.
| Line | What it carries | The rule people miss |
|---|---|---|
| Host | The names of whoever is issuing the invitation. | Titles are written out in full, except Mr., Mrs., Ms. and Dr. "Doctor and Mrs." is correct when the doctor is the husband. |
| Request | The honour of your presence, or the pleasure of your company. | Presence belongs to a house of worship. Company belongs everywhere else. |
| Names | Who is being married, honored, or celebrated. | Bride first when her family hosts. Middle names in full, no nicknames, no bare initials. |
| Date and time | Day, date, year, hour. | Everything spelled out. "at half after four o'clock", never 4:30 PM, and the year gets its own lowercase line. |
| Place | Venue, city, state. | No street address and no ZIP code. Those go on the reception or details card, where a driver actually needs them. |
Below that block sit the extras, one per line: reception to follow, the dress code, and the reply instruction if you are not enclosing a separate card. Keep them short. A formal block reads as formal because of the space around it, and every sentence you add takes some of that space back.
If you want the layout rules that go with the wording, what to put on wedding invitations covers the full enclosure set, and the invitation format guide handles margins and type sizing.
Wording Templates You Can Copy
Swap the names and the details. The line breaks matter as much as the words, because centered type is read in blocks and a break in the wrong place turns a formal card into a flyer.

Two variations cover most of what these templates do not. When a parent has died, the surviving parent hosts alone and the deceased is honored in the names line: "Sofia Elena, daughter of Mr. Michael Ruiz and the late Mrs. Elena Ruiz". When parents are divorced, each name takes its own line with no "and" between them, since "and" reads as a married couple.
Set the text in one serif family at two sizes, the names larger than everything else, and centre every line. You can drop any of these blocks straight into a correctly sized layout from our blank template library before uploading the file to wedding invitations, which start at $19.77.
Dress Code, Reply Cards, and the Lines Below the Block
The dress code is two words in the lower right corner. It is also a promise, so print it only if you mean to hold guests to it.
| What the card says | What guests will wear | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| White Tie | Tailcoat and floor-length gown. | State dinners and a handful of charity balls. Almost never a wedding. |
| Black Tie | Tuxedo, floor-length or formal midi. | Evening ceremony, six o'clock or later, indoors. |
| Black Tie Optional | Tuxedo or a dark suit, cocktail length upward. | An evening event with a guest list that will not all own a tuxedo. |
| Cocktail Attire | Suit, cocktail dress. | Late afternoon and early evening, and most non wedding galas. |
The reply card is the other line below the block. A printed card with a stamped, pre addressed reply envelope still gets the highest return from a guest list with people over sixty on it, and the traditional layout is short: an "M" line for the guest to write in their own title, an accepts or regrets line, and the reply-by date written out. If you serve more than one entree, add the meal choices as small check boxes rather than a sentence.
Give yourself a real cushion on that date. Set the reply-by three to four weeks before the event, because the caterer wants a count roughly two weeks out and the last fifteen percent of replies always arrive by phone. Full phrasing options are in our RSVP card wording guide, and matching RSVP cards start at $19.77 with invitation envelopes from $170.42 for the outer and reply set.
Sizes and Stock That Suit Formal Wording
Formal wording needs room. Eleven centered lines with generous leading is the norm, and that is why 5 by 7 inches became the standard invitation size: it is the smallest sheet where the block still breathes inside a comfortable margin. Anything smaller and you start cutting words, which is where "and" creeps back into a divorced parents line.
Stock is where the decision has consequences. A 14pt or 16pt cover holds centered type cleanly and takes flat ink, foil or a coating without argument. Letterpress invitations, which start at $220.20, need thick soft cotton stock because the impression has to have somewhere to go, and that softness is exactly why long formal blocks at small sizes fill in: the pressed counters of an 8 point serif close up. Keep letterpress copy short and set it a size larger than you would for offset.
Foil behaves the opposite way. It is a metal leaf stamped onto the surface, so it does not care what colour the sheet is underneath, which is the reason a navy or charcoal invitation almost always uses it. Foil wedding invitations start at $421.91 at their opening quantity, and the die setup means the price gap closes as the run grows rather than staying proportional.
Sizing the rest of the suite follows from the invitation. RSVP cards run smaller so they sit inside the invitation envelope with the reply envelope, and every enclosure should share the invitation's stock or a lighter version of it. The invitation sizes guide gives the exact pairings, and the invitation printing category lists every stock we run. If you are undecided between a single flat card and a folded one, folded versus flat invitations makes the case both ways. Order a proof before the full run, always. Reading a formal block on a screen hides line break problems that a printed card makes obvious in two seconds.
Wally explains formal wording
Five lines, spelled out, in this order

Wally starts at the top with whoever is paying, then picks the request line by looking at the venue: presence for a church, company for a ballroom. The names come next, bride first when her family hosts. Then the date, the year and the hour, all as words, because a formal card has no numerals on it. The place is venue, city and state, with the street address saved for the details card. Everything left over, the reception, the dress code, the reply, lines up underneath, one per line.

Common Questions
Your invitation wording questions, answered
Should a formal invitation say honour or honor?
Use "honour" when the ceremony takes place in a house of worship, and pair it with "presence": request the honour of your presence. Anywhere else, a hotel, a garden, a courthouse, a vineyard, the line becomes "request the pleasure of your company". The British spelling is a convention of the request line only. It does not spread to the rest of the card, and nobody writes "favour of a reply" and "honor of your presence" on the same piece without someone noticing.
How do you word a formal invitation when the parents are divorced?
Put the mother's name on the first line and the father's on the second, with no "and" joining them, because "and" implies a married couple. If either has remarried and is hosting with a new spouse, use the couple's current names on that line. When both families host together, "Together with their families" on line one avoids ranking anyone, and it is now the most common opening on formal wedding invitations we print.
Where does the dress code go on the invitation?
Lower right corner of the invitation, on its own line, or lower right of the reception card if you are using one. Two words is the whole entry: Black Tie, Black Tie Optional, Cocktail Attire, White Tie. Do not explain it on the card. If guests need guidance, that belongs on the wedding website or the details card, not on a piece of formal stationery where every added sentence weakens the block.
Can you print "no children" on a wedding invitation?
No, and it is the etiquette mistake that generates the most awkward phone calls. The guest list is communicated by the envelope, not by the card: the inner envelope names exactly who is invited, so "Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez" means two seats and nothing more. Reinforce it on the wedding website in plain language. Printing a restriction on the invitation reads as a rebuke to people who have not done anything yet.
How far ahead do formal invitations go out?
Six to eight weeks before the date for a local event, and about three months for a destination wedding or anything that requires flights. Save the dates go out six to twelve months ahead. Set the reply-by date three to four weeks before the event, because caterers usually want a final count around two weeks out and you will spend the gap chasing the guests who never mailed the card back. Our guide on when to send wedding invitations lays out the full calendar.
How many invitations should you order?
Count households, not people, then add ten to fifteen extras. A family of four gets one invitation. The extras cover the addressing mistakes, the two relatives your mother remembers late, and the keepsake copy you will want later. Reprinting a short run costs far more per piece than the extras did, and on a letterpress or foil job the setup makes a second small run genuinely expensive.
Do you need a separate RSVP card?
You need a reply mechanism, and a printed card with a stamped reply envelope still returns the highest response rate for formal events with older guests. The alternative is a reply line on the details card pointing to a wedding website. RSVP cards start at $19.77, so the card itself is rarely the expensive part. The postage on the reply envelope, times two hundred households, is the cost people forget to budget.
