Custom Printed Gift Bags, Sizes, Handles and Branding Explained

Four bag styles, one sizing order that everyone gets backwards, and the handle figure suppliers quote two different ways. Then the cheaper way to make a plain bag look like yours.

A custom printed gift bag is specified with four numbers in a fixed order: width, gusset depth, height, then handle drop. The gusset decides whether the item fits, the handle sets the weight the bag survives, and the build decides the printing, since a laminated euro tote takes photographs while an uncoated kraft bag only holds one or two spot colors. Custom-tooled bags start in the thousands, so below that scale printed tissue paper, a hang tag and a sealing label brand a stock bag for far less.

Quick answer

Width, gusset, height, drop, in that order

Every gift bag spec is four numbers and one build choice. Width is the front panel, the gusset is the side depth that decides whether your product fits, height should sit two inches above the tallest item so tissue can show, and handle drop is the gap between the bag top and the inside of the handle. The build follows from the artwork: a laminated euro tote prints photographs and gradients, an uncoated kraft bag prints one or two spot colors and warms every one of them. Then check the minimum, because a tooled bag starts in the thousands.

How a custom printed gift bag is measured: width, gusset depth, height and handle drop A front and side view of a paper gift bag with dimension arrows. The width runs across the front panel, the gusset depth runs across the side panel, the height runs from the bottom crease to the top fold, and the handle drop is the gap between the top of the bag and the inside of the handle. Three notes explain the W by D by H order, what handle drop controls, and how much space the side seam and top fold take out of the printable panel. Four numbers spec a gift bag Width, gusset, height, handle drop. In that order, every time. W width H height D gusset handle drop bottom crease top fold The order never changes A 10 x 5 x 13 bag is 10 in across the front, 5 in deep and 13 in tall. Swap the last two and the bag arrives half the height you meant. Drop is not handle length Drop is the gap from the top of the bag to the inside of the handle. Under 3 in, only fingers fit. The panel is smaller than the bag Keep type half an inch inside the glued side seam and the top fold or the folds eat it. Gusset is the number people get wrong. It decides whether the box inside fits, not the width. 4OVER4.COM guide to custom printed gift bags

The Four Gift Bag Styles, and What Each One Is Actually For

Printed cotton tote bags from 4OVER4 shown as the reusable alternative to a paper gift bag

Almost every paper gift bag on the market is one of four builds, and the build decides the printing before anything else does.

StyleHow it is builtPrinting it takesWhere it belongs
Euro toteA litho printed sheet laminated with film, folded over a rigid top band, with rope or ribbon handles knotted through eyelets.Full color process, photographs, gradients, spot gloss or matte film.Retail and gifting where the bag gets reused and seen again.
Kraft SOS bagSingle ply kraft with a square bottom and twisted paper handles glued under a reinforced band. One or two spot colors flexo, printed straight onto brown uncoated stock.Cafes, bakeries, markets, anywhere volume matters more than gloss.
Die-cut handle bagThe handle is punched through the folded top band, so there is no separate handle to attach.Same as the stock it is made from, usually one or two colors.Events and giveaways where cost per bag and flat shipping win.
Flat merchandise bagNo gusset and no handle. The top folds over and a sticker seals it.Light coverage, often just a mark and a seal.Apparel, prints, anything thin that goes into a larger bag anyway.

Read the third column before you fall in love with a design. If your artwork is a photograph or a gradient, the kraft SOS bag will disappoint you every time, because uncoated brown paper absorbs ink, dulls the color and warms every hue toward the paper. That same absorbency is why a simple one color mark on kraft looks confident and expensive.

The trade-off runs the other way too. The euro tote takes the picture perfectly, but the film that makes it durable is what keeps it out of the paper recycling stream. Our breakdown of the nine packaging types puts bags next to boxes, mailers and sleeves if you are still deciding on the format itself.

How Gift Bag Sizes Are Written, and Why the Gusset Decides the Fit

Pillow boxes printed by 4OVER4, an example of packaging measured width by depth by height

Bag dimensions are always written width by gusset by height, in that order. Width is the front panel across, the gusset is the depth of the side panel, and height runs from the bottom crease to the top fold. Get the order wrong on a purchase order and you receive a bag that is technically correct and completely useless.

The gusset is the number people underestimate. A bag can be wide and tall and still refuse a shoe box, because the side panel only opens to three inches. Measure the deepest item you plan to pack, add about an inch so the tissue and the item are not fighting each other, and buy that depth.

Height works the same way with a different reason. Leave two inches of bag above the tallest item so tissue can rise out of the top. A bag packed level to the rim looks like a grocery run.

Common sizeRoughlyWhat it takesTypical use
Small8 x 4 x 10 inCandles, jewellery boxes, small skincare sets.Counter bags and add-on gifts.
Medium10 x 5 x 13 inA folded garment, a book, a boxed mug.The default retail size most brands order first.
Large13 x 5 x 13 inTwo or three boxed items side by side.Holiday sets and multi-item purchases.
Bottle5 x 5 x 14 inA single 750 ml bottle standing upright.Wine, spirits, oil and vinegar gifting.

One more measurement that never makes it onto the size chart: the printable panel is smaller than the front of the bag. The glued side seam and the folded top band each eat into the artwork, so keep type and logos at least half an inch inside both. It is the same discipline as any structural print job, and the guide to measuring packaging correctly covers the inside versus outside dimension trap that ruins fits on boxes as well as bags.

Handles, Handle Drop, and the Weight the Bag Will Really Carry

Close view of the stitched handles on 4OVER4 printed cotton tote bags

The handle is where cheap bags fail, and it fails in public, usually in a parking lot. There are four common types and they carry very different loads.

  • Twisted paper. Glued to a reinforced band inside the top fold. Comfortable, fully recyclable with the bag, and reliable up to roughly eight to ten pounds. It gives out fast if the bag gets wet.
  • Cotton rope or cord. Knotted through metal or plastic eyelets. The strongest option by a wide margin, and the only one worth trusting with something heavy. It adds a hand assembly step, so it adds cost per bag.
  • Grosgrain or satin ribbon. The best looking of the four and the least practical. Ribbon slips through the eyelet under load and flattens against the hand, so it belongs on light, premium contents.
  • Die-cut. No handle at all, just a shaped hole punched through the top band. Cheapest per unit, ships flat, and cuts into fingers after a few pounds.

Then there is handle drop, which is quietly the most useful number in the whole spec. Drop is the gap between the top edge of the bag and the inside of the handle, not the total length of the cord. Around three inches admits fingers only. Five to six inches lets a customer hook the bag over a forearm. Nine to ten inches is shoulder carry, which is the range printed tote bags are cut for and gift bags almost never are.

Ask the supplier for drop explicitly. Some quote total cord length, which includes the two knots and the span across the bag, and the two figures are far enough apart to change how the bag is used.

Branding a Bag Without Ordering Thousands of Them

Custom printed tissue paper by 4OVER4 used to line and brand a plain gift bag

Here is the honest part. A custom-tooled gift bag needs a die and plates, so runs start in the thousands and the price only makes sense at that scale. Most brands asking about custom printed gift bags do not need a custom bag. They need a plain bag that reads as theirs, and that is a printing job we do run.

Three pieces do most of the work. Custom tissue paper from $126.32 lines the bag and shows the moment it opens, which is the highest attention second in the whole handover. A standard hang tag from $25.27 ties to the handle and carries the message, the care instructions or the price. A packaging label from $29.16 seals the top fold and turns a folded bag into a closed package. Together those three cost less than a short run of printed bags and arrive in days rather than weeks.

If the bag itself has to be branded, two routes beat a paper gift bag on most jobs. Cotton totes from $5.00 and printed tote bags from $22.73 get kept and carried again, which is why they outperform paper at trade shows and events. For small premium products, a rigid shell photographs better and protects more: pillow boxes from $284.49 hold their shape in a way no bag manages, and the box style guide walks through when to make that swap.

Whichever route you take, set the artwork up like packaging rather than like a flyer. Full size, outlined type, safe margins inside every fold and seam. Start from a correctly sized layout in the blank template library, and if you are ordering on a deadline, how online printing works lays out where a finishing pass sits in the schedule.

Wally sizes a gift bag

Width, gusset, height, drop, and then the tissue

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, measuring the gusset of a paper gift bag with a ruler while printed tissue paper and a hang tag wait beside it

Wally measures across the front for the width, then across the side panel for the gusset, because that is the number that decides whether the box goes in. Height gets two extra inches so the tissue can rise above the rim. Then he checks the drop, the gap between the top of the bag and the inside of the handle, since three inches only takes fingers. When the bag itself is plain, he lines it with printed tissue paper and ties a hang tag to the handle, and nobody notices he did not print the bag.

Common Questions

Your gift bag questions, answered

What size gift bag fits a wine bottle?

A standard 750 ml bottle runs roughly 3 to 3.5 inches across the base and about 12 inches tall, so the bag has to be at least 13 to 14 inches high or the neck sticks out. Bottle bags are usually built narrow and deep, around 5 x 5 x 14 inches, so the bottle stands upright instead of rolling sideways. A wide shopper does the opposite: the bottle tips, the handle strains on one side, and the paper tears at the fold. If you are packing the bottle rather than carrying it, a rigid box holds it steadier than any bag.

Can a gift bag be printed in full color on both sides?

On a laminated euro tote, yes. That bag starts as a flat litho sheet, so it takes full color process printing, photographs and gradients across the front, back and both gussets before it is laminated and glued into shape. A kraft SOS bag is different: it is usually printed flexo in one or two spot colors directly on uncoated brown paper, which drinks ink and shifts every color darker and warmer. Photos and gradients do not survive that surface. Line art, solid type and a single strong mark do.

Are printed gift bags recyclable?

Plain uncoated kraft bags are, including the twisted paper handles, because the whole thing is one material. Laminated bags are not accepted by most curbside paper programs, because the film is bonded to the fibre and cannot be separated at a paper mill. Rope, ribbon and grommets have to be pulled out first whatever the bag is made of. If a recyclable claim matters to your brand, specify uncoated kraft with paper handles and print it with a water-based ink, and expect the finish to look matte rather than glossy.

What is the minimum order for custom printed gift bags?

Custom-tooled bags start in the thousands at most bag converters, because a die has to be cut for the shape and plates made for the artwork, and those costs only make sense spread across a large run. That is the real reason small brands end up buying stock bags. Below a few thousand units, branding a plain bag with printed tissue paper, a hang tag and a sealing sticker costs a fraction of a custom bag run and looks deliberate rather than cheap.

Does 4OVER4.COM print paper gift bags?

We do not run a paper gift bag line. What we print is everything that turns a plain bag into a branded package, plus the alternatives people usually reach for instead: custom tissue paper from $126.32, standard hang tags from $25.27, packaging labels from $29.16, cotton tote bags from $5.00 and printed tote bags from $22.73, and pillow boxes from $284.49 when the gift needs a rigid shell. If your product is small and premium, the box route usually photographs better than a bag anyway.

How much handle drop do I need?

Drop is the gap between the top of the bag and the inside of the handle, not the length of the handle itself. Around 3 inches lets fingers through and nothing more, which is fine for a small counter bag. Five to six inches lets someone hook the bag over a forearm while they use a phone. Nine to ten inches is the shoulder-carry range, which is why tote bags are cut with a long strap and gift bags almost never are. Ask for the drop figure explicitly, because some suppliers quote the total cord length instead and the two numbers are far apart.
