Question

Do I need to add bleed to my postcard file?

Answer

Yes. Add 0.125 inches of bleed on all four sides so no white edges appear after trimming. For a 4 by 6 inch card, that means building the file at 4.25 by 6.25 inches. Keep critical elements away from the trim line too.

  • Bleed: extend the background 0.125 in past every edge.
  • File size example: a 4 x 6 in card becomes a 4.25 x 6.25 in file.
  • Safe zone: keep text and logos at least 0.125 in inside the trim line.

Bleed protects your design from the small shifts that happen during cutting.
