Trifold, bifold, z-fold. Yes, I can fold a brochure blindfolded.

It applies the right rule for each fold, including the fold-in panel that has to be 1/16 in narrower.

4OVER4 asks for 1/8 in of bleed on standard print and 1/4 in on large format. This page uses the standard figure because the configurator marks this product as standard print.

Bleed goes around the outside of the whole flat sheet, not around each panel. The folds are creases, not cuts. Keep text 1/8 in away from every fold line as well as from the trim: ink cracks on a crease, and a headline straddling one reads badly even when the fold is perfect.

What the Folded Brochures configurator says about size

Sizes
The configurator offers 6 sizes for this product. Every one of them is listed above, exactly as the configurator lists it.
Custom size
This product takes a custom size. The configurator accepts 5.5 to 11 in on the width and 8.5 to 25.5 in on the height, in steps of 0.1 in.
Press limits
On top of the product limits the press bounds apply: the shorter side must be 1.5 to 22 in and the longer side 1.5 to 28 in. The configurator turns the size the same way round before it checks, so 11 x 2.5 and 2.5 x 11 are the same size to it.
If it is out of range
This custom size is currently not available for this product. Please select a different combination (switch between width and height values) or try selecting another product from the Print Products Menu. Contact us if you have a Custom Order.

About the brochure & fold calculator

Pick the sheet and the fold, and it gives you the exact panel widths, including the fold-in panel that has to be narrower, with the fold diagram drawn.

A letter tri-fold has two panels of 3 11/16 inches and one fold-in panel of 3 5/8 inches. The fold-in panel has to be 1/16 inch narrower, or the brochure bows open when it closes.

The panel that has to be narrower

On a tri-fold, one panel folds inside the other two. If all three panels are exactly a third of the sheet, that inner panel hits the fold before the brochure closes, and the finished piece bows open or creases along the wrong line.

So the fold-in panel is made about 1/16 inch narrower. On an 11 inch tri-fold that gives two panels of 3 11/16 inches and a fold-in panel of 3 5/8 inches. It is the single most common mistake on a folded piece, because a third of 11 is 3.667 and it looks right in the file.

A z-fold does not have this problem. Nothing folds inside anything, so all three panels are an equal third. The calculator applies the right rule for whichever fold you pick.

The folds, and what each is for

Half fold gives four pages from one sheet and is the simplest. Tri-fold, or letter fold, gives six panels and is the standard brochure and the one that fits a #10 envelope. Z-fold gives the same six panels but opens like a concertina, so all three panels can be seen at once.

Gate fold has two wings that fold in to meet in the middle, which makes an opening reveal. Roll fold and double parallel fold both give eight panels from one sheet, roll fold by wrapping each panel inside the next and double parallel by folding the sheet in half and in half again.

Setting up a folded file

Build the brochure flat, as one spread at the full sheet size, with the fold positions marked as guides rather than drawn on the artwork. Give the whole sheet 0.125 inches of bleed, not each panel.

Keep text 0.125 inches inside the trim and, more importantly, 0.125 inches away from every fold line. Ink cracks along a fold on a heavy stock, and a headline straddling a crease reads badly even when the fold is perfect.

Common questions

Questions about brochure sizes

What is the standard brochure size?

8.5 x 11 inches folded in three, which gives six panels of about 3.67 inches each. 8.5 x 14 and 11 x 17 inches are the other two common sheets.

What are the panel sizes for a tri-fold brochure?

On an 11 inch sheet, two panels of 3 11/16 inches and one fold-in panel of 3 5/8 inches. The fold-in panel is 1/16 inch narrower so it does not bind when the brochure closes.

What is the difference between a tri-fold and a z-fold?

A tri-fold wraps one panel inside the others, so that panel must be 1/16 inch narrower. A z-fold folds like a concertina, nothing wraps anything, and all three panels are an equal third of the sheet.

How many panels does a gate fold have?

Four: two wings that fold in to meet in the middle, plus the two halves of the inside spread. The wings together are 1/16 inch narrower than the sheet's half width so they do not collide.

Where does bleed go on a folded brochure?

Around the outside of the whole flat sheet, 0.125 inches on each edge. Panels do not get their own bleed, because the folds are creases, not cuts.
