Standard Rack Cards

4OVER4 asks for 1/8 in of bleed on standard print and 1/4 in on large format. This page uses the standard figure because the configurator marks this product as standard print.

4 x 9 in is the standard because that is what a literature rack pocket holds, and it also fits a #10 envelope unfolded. Only the top 2 in shows when the rack is full, so the name and the hook go there.

What the Standard Rack Cards configurator says about size

Sizes
The configurator offers 2 sizes for this product. Every one of them is listed above, exactly as the configurator lists it.
Custom size
This product takes a custom size. The configurator accepts 3.5 to 4 in on the width and 8.5 to 9 in on the height, in steps of 0.1 in.
Press limits
On top of the product limits the press bounds apply: the shorter side must be 1.5 to 22 in and the longer side 1.5 to 28 in. The configurator turns the size the same way round before it checks, so 11 x 2.5 and 2.5 x 11 are the same size to it.
If it is out of range
This custom size is currently not available for this product. Please select a different combination (switch between width and height values) or try selecting another product from the Print Products Menu. Contact us if you have a Custom Order.

About the rack card, menu & more

Four counter and display formats in one place: rack cards, menus, door hangers and table tents, each with the sizes we actually print.

The standard rack card is 4 x 9 inches, because that is what a literature rack pocket holds. Only the top 2 inches shows in a full rack, so the name and the hook belong there.

Rack cards are 4 x 9 inches because the rack is

A rack card is 4 x 9 inches because that is what a standard literature rack pocket holds. It is also the size that fits a #10 envelope without folding, which is why hotels and visitor centres standardised on it.

3.5 x 8.5 inches is the other common size, for slimmer racks. Anything wider than 4 inches will not stay in a standard pocket, and anything shorter than about 8 inches sinks below the lip and cannot be seen.

The top 2 inches are the only part visible when the card is in a full rack. Put the name and the hook there.

Menus, door hangers and table tents

Menus run 4.25 x 11 in for a slim insert, 8.5 x 11 in for a single page, 8.5 x 14 in for a legal page and 11 x 17 in for a folded two-page menu. Laminate anything that will be handled by customers.

Door hangers are 3.5 x 8.5, 4 x 9 or 4.25 x 11 inches with a die-cut hole near the top, typically 1.25 to 1.75 inches across with a slit to the edge. The exact die varies, so keep artwork clear of the top 2 inches and confirm the die before you commit.

A table tent is printed flat and scored twice. The 4 x 6 inch finished tent is a 4 x 16.25 inch flat sheet, because it needs two faces, a top fold and a base flap. Design it flat with the scores marked, not as two separate faces.

Shared setup rules

All four print at 300 DPI with 0.125 inches of bleed on every edge and text kept 0.125 inches inside the trim.

On a door hanger, treat the hole as a hard exclusion: nothing readable within half an inch of it. On a table tent, keep text off the score lines for the same reason ink cracks on a brochure fold.

Common questions

Questions about rack card size

What is the standard rack card size?

4 x 9 inches. It fits a standard literature rack pocket and a #10 envelope without folding. 3.5 x 8.5 inches is the slim alternative.

What size is a door hanger?

3.5 x 8.5, 4 x 9 or 4.25 x 11 inches, with a die-cut hole near the top that is typically 1.25 to 1.75 inches across with a slit through to the edge.

What size is a table tent?

The common finished tent is 4 x 6 inches, printed on a 4 x 16.25 inch flat sheet that is scored twice: two faces, a top fold and a base flap.

What size is a standard menu?

8.5 x 11 inches for a single page and 8.5 x 14 inches for a legal page. 4.25 x 11 inches is the slim insert and 11 x 17 inches folds in half into a two-page menu.

How much of a rack card is visible in the rack?

About the top 2 inches. Everything below that is hidden by the card in front of it, so the name and the reason to pick it up both belong in that strip.
