- Face material. White vinyl for anything that needs the art to pop off the surface. Clear BOPP when you want the bottle, jar or window showing through. - Laminate and finish. Gloss for anything washed or rained on: it sheds water and wipes clean with a thumb. Matte for stickers that get photographed, since it kills glare, with the trade-off that it holds detergent film and shows sponge scuffs sooner. Skipping the laminate saves a little and costs a lot on anything outdoors.
- Cut. Die cut gives you a single sticker in the shape of the art, which looks better in a hand and worse in an envelope. Kiss cut leaves the sticker on a backing sheet, which is easier to mail, easier to peel with cold fingers, and protects the edge until it is used. Are all vinyl stickers waterproof?
The vinyl is. The printing on it may not be. Vinyl film does not absorb water, so the sheet itself survives a soaking indefinitely, but a digitally printed image sitting on the surface can abrade, fade or wash faint without a laminate over it. When a shop says vinyl stickers are waterproof, ask the follow-up question: is the print laminated. If the answer is no, treat it as a splash-resistant sticker rather than one you can scrub.
Can waterproof stickers go in the dishwasher?
A laminated vinyl sticker survives a dishwasher, with two conditions. Put the item on the top rack, away from the heating element, because sustained heat near the element is harder on the laminate than the water is. Wait at least 24 hours after applying before the first cycle so the adhesive has bonded. Hand washing will always give you more cycles than a dishwasher, and on a bottle that matters to somebody it is worth the trade.
