What is variable data printing?

Variable data printing (VDP) is a digital method where text, images, or graphics change from one printed piece to the next without stopping the press. You supply one print-ready master design plus a data file, such as a spreadsheet, CSV, or database, where each row holds the unique details for a recipient and maps to the fields you want swapped, and the press substitutes those elements automatically as it runs at full speed.

• Personalized names and offers: each piece can address the recipient directly.
• Unique codes: individual coupon codes, QR codes, tickets, or tracking numbers per piece.
• Sequential numbering: numbered tickets with no manual work.
• Segmented content: different messages for different customer groups in a single run.

It is widely used for personalized direct mail, custom event badges, membership and loyalty cards, and individualized promotions. Because the changes happen on the fly, you get true one-to-one printing without the cost of separate print jobs for each version. Note that VDP only works on digital presses, since offset repeats the same plate image on every sheet.
