Print the full 12 in. The part that goes into the cassette still has to be printed, because it is what the mechanism grips. Just put nothing there you need anyone to see.
This one sits on a counter at reading distance, so it can carry real sentences. Keep the message in the shaded band, roughly 6 to 11 in up from the bottom.

Every retractable stand size with the part the stand hides marked on it, so your logo does not disappear into the cassette.
The standard retractable banner is 33 x 81 inches, and the stand hides about 3 inches at the bottom and 1 at the top. Print the full height, but put nothing you need to see in those bands.
The printed height is not the visible height
A retractable banner is printed as one long piece and clamped at both ends. The bottom of the print is fixed into the cassette and never comes out of it, and the top is gripped by the rail. On a standard stand that is about 3 inches lost at the bottom and about 1 inch at the top.
So on a 33 x 81 in banner, the visible area is roughly 33 x 77 in. Design to the full 81 in, because the print has to fill the whole piece, but put nothing you need to see in the bottom 3 inches or the top inch.
The sizes
33 x 81 in is the standard retractable footprint and the one most stand hardware is built for. 4OVER4 prints it on the double-sided stand, plus a 24 x 79 in budget stand, a 23 x 66 in economy fabric stand and an 8.25 x 12 in table-top mini.
Stand hardware is not interchangeable across widths. If you are reprinting for a stand you already own, measure the cassette, do not assume.
Eye height is the design constraint
A standing adult's eye line is about 60 to 65 inches off the floor. On an 81 inch banner that is roughly the upper third. Everything that has to be read at a glance, the headline and the logo, belongs between about 50 and 75 inches from the bottom.
The bottom two feet are below waist height and are usually blocked by whoever is standing at your table. Treat that area as decoration.

How much of a roll-up banner is hidden by the stand?
About 3 inches at the bottom, inside the cassette, and about 1 inch at the top in the rail. On a 33 x 81 in banner that leaves roughly 33 x 77 in visible.
Where should the logo go on a retractable banner?
In the top third, roughly 50 to 75 inches from the bottom, which is at or just above standing eye height. The bottom two feet are usually blocked by people and furniture.
Does a retractable banner need bleed?
No side bleed, because the edges are not trimmed, but the file must be the full printed height including the part that goes into the cassette. Keep content 1 inch in from each side.
What resolution does a roll-up banner need?
150 DPI at the finished size. A 33 x 81 in banner at 150 DPI is 4950 x 12150 pixels, which is large: build it in vector where you can and rasterise only what has to be.
