Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot

From fridge-sized to wall-sized. I've measured them all, twice.

Every size is drawn to scale next to a person, so you can see how big it really is.

4OVER4 asks for 1/8 in of bleed on standard print and 1/4 in on large format. This page uses the standard figure because the configurator marks this product as standard print.

Going into a frame? Pull the important content half an inch further in. The frame lip covers the outer edge, and it covers more on a cheap frame than an expensive one.

What the Standard Posters configurator says about size

Sizes
The configurator offers 6 sizes for this product. Every one of them is listed above, exactly as the configurator lists it.
Custom size
This product takes a custom size. The configurator accepts 11 to 22 in on the width and 17 to 28 in on the height, in steps of 0.1 in.
Press limits
On top of the product limits the press bounds apply: the shorter side must be 1.5 to 22 in and the longer side 1.5 to 28 in. The configurator turns the size the same way round before it checks, so 11 x 2.5 and 2.5 x 11 are the same size to it.
If it is out of range
This custom size is currently not available for this product. Please select a different combination (switch between width and height values) or try selecting another product from the Print Products Menu. Contact us if you have a Custom Order.

About the poster size guide

Every poster standard in one place, each one drawn to scale against a person so you can see how big it really is before you order it.

The standard poster sizes are 11 x 17, 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 inches, and the movie one-sheet is 27 x 40. Posters are read from feet away, so 150 DPI at the finished size is enough.

The four sizes that cover most jobs

11 x 17 in is the small poster, the one that fits a standard printer and goes on a noticeboard. 18 x 24 in is the workhorse for events and retail. 24 x 36 in is the large wall poster. 27 x 40 in is the modern movie one-sheet, and it is the reason framed movie posters all look the same size.

Before 1985 the one-sheet was 27 x 41 in, which is why an older poster will not sit in a modern frame. Half-sheets are 22 x 28 in, inserts are 14 x 36 in, and lobby cards are 11 x 14 in.

Poster board is not a poster size

Standard poster board from a stationery shop is 22 x 28 in, and the full sheet is 28 x 44 in. They are cut from the board stock, not from the print standards, so they do not line up with 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 and no standard frame fits them.

If the poster has to go in an off-the-shelf frame, pick the frame first and print to it.

Resolution for large prints

A poster is read from several feet away, so it does not need the 300 DPI a business card needs. 150 DPI at final size is the working standard, which makes a 24 x 36 in poster a 3600 x 5400 pixel file.

Keep the bleed at 0.125 in and the safe margin at 0.125 in. If the poster is going into a frame, pull the important content a further half inch in, because the frame lip will eat the edge.

Common questions

Questions about poster sizes

What are standard poster sizes?

11 x 17, 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 inches are the three standard US poster sizes. 27 x 40 inches is the movie one-sheet, and 22 x 28 inches is standard poster board.

What size is a movie poster?

27 x 40 inches for anything made since about 1985. Older one-sheets are 27 x 41 inches, which is why they do not fit a modern frame.

What size is A1 in inches?

A1 is 594 x 841 mm, which is 23.4 x 33.1 inches. A2 is 420 x 594 mm or 16.5 x 23.4 inches, and A3 is 297 x 420 mm or 11.7 x 16.5 inches.

What resolution does a poster need?

150 DPI at the finished size is the working standard for posters. A 24 x 36 in poster at 150 DPI is 3600 x 5400 pixels. 300 DPI is only worth it if people will read it from arm's length.

What size is poster board?

22 x 28 inches for a standard sheet, 28 x 44 inches for a full sheet. These come from the board stock, not from the poster print standards, so no standard poster frame fits them.
