Do you print white ink on plastic cards? Can I use transparent areas in my design?
White ink printing is available on plastic cards, which is what makes a design pop on clear or frosted stock where the card itself is see-through. Transparency in your file needs a little planning so it renders the way you expect.
- White ink: used as its own layer to add solid areas, a backing for color, or bright highlights on transparent cards.
- Transparent areas: decide which parts of the card should stay see-through and which need a white underprint.
- Before you submit: confirm how your chosen finish and card thickness will treat the clear zones, since results differ between clear, frosted, and white stock.
A quick file review with the design team before production helps avoid surprises where you wanted clear but got white, or the reverse.
On 30mil clear plastic cards (credit card thickness), the white layer prints with CMYK on one side (5/0) or both sides (5/5), and spot UV and foil stamping are available too.
