Square Poster Sizes and What Each One Is For

Jordan Kim
Jordan Kim Sustainability & Industry Editor at 4OVER4.COM

Nine square sizes cover nearly every job, and none of them is a preset button. Here is the ladder, the file each size needs, and why the frame costs more than the print.

Square posters are printed at 8 x 8, 10 x 10, 12 x 12, 16 x 16, 18 x 18, 20 x 20, 24 x 24, 30 x 30 and 36 x 36 inches, and each size wants a file of 150 pixels per inch, so a 24 inch square needs 3600 x 3600 pixels. At 4OVER4.COM none of those are preset buttons. The 14 poster presets are rectangular, 11 x 17 through 18 x 24, so a true square is entered in the custom size field, which takes any dimension up to 48 x 96 inches. On stretched canvas the largest stock square is 36 x 36.

Quick answer

The square comes out of the short side

Every poster preset is a rectangle, so the biggest true square any of them holds equals its short side. An 11 x 17 sheet gives an 11 inch square, 12 x 18 gives 12, 16 x 20 gives 16, and 18 x 24 gives 18. Anything wider than 18 inches on a side is typed into the custom size field instead, which runs to 48 x 96 inches and prices from area. That single fact explains why square poster sizes look so different from the standard poster ladder.

The square you can cut from each 4OVER4 poster preset Four rectangular poster presets drawn to scale on a shared baseline, 11 by 17, 12 by 18, 16 by 20 and 18 by 24 inches. Inside each one a dashed square sits on the baseline, its side equal to the short side of the preset, giving 11 by 11, 12 by 12, 16 by 16 and 18 by 18 inches. Larger squares need the custom size field. The square hiding inside each poster preset Solid outline = the preset. Dashed = the largest true square it holds. Drawn to scale. shared baseline 11 x 17 11 x 11 12 x 18 12 x 12 16 x 20 16 x 16 18 x 24 18 x 18 18 in max Every preset is rectangular, so the biggest true square it yields equals its short side. 18 x 24 tops out at an 18 inch square. Anything wider than that is typed into the custom size field, which accepts any dimension up to 48 x 96 inches.

The Square Poster Sizes Worth Printing

Nine sizes cover almost every square poster anyone orders. They survive because each one lines up with something physical: a shelf, a record sleeve, a hook rail, a shop window, a lobby wall.

The one people get wrong is the jump from 12 to 16. A 12 inch square looks generous flat on a desk and disappears on a wall. If the print is meant to be the thing you notice when you walk in, start at 18. For the full rectangular ladder alongside these, the common poster sizes guide lists what the presses run as standard.

Why Every True Square Is a Custom Size

Here is the part most size guides skip. The 14 presets on square posters are rectangular, running from 11 x 17 up through 12 x 18, 16 x 20 and 18 x 24. None of them is a square. The name describes the product family, not the button you press.

To get an actual square you switch to the custom size field and type both numbers. It accepts any dimension up to 48 x 96 inches, so every size in the table above is available, plus anything odd you need for a specific alcove. The trade-off is that custom sizing is priced from area rather than from a preset tier, so there is no size where the number suddenly drops. A 20 inch square costs what 400 square inches of that material costs, and the configurator shows it live before you commit.

Two ceilings are worth knowing before you design. Paper and vinyl stop at 48 x 96, which makes 48 x 48 the largest true square on a flat stock. Square canvas prints are a separate product with 12 sizes topping out at a 36 x 36 square and custom sizing to 36 x 48, so 36 inches is the biggest square that arrives stretched and ready to hang. Above that you are into mounted or hanging territory rather than framed art.

Quantity behaves differently too. Posters run 1 to 100 in a single order, so a one-off 24 inch square is a normal job rather than a favor, and a run of 40 identical window squares prints on the same ticket. Standard production is 2 business days out of New York, with next-day and same-day rush when a launch date moves.

Building a File That Holds Up at Square Sizes

Multiply the finished inches by 150 and you have your target pixel dimensions. That is the whole rule for anything read from arm's length to a few feet. Past about eight feet you can drop to 100 ppi without anyone seeing the difference, which is why a 30 inch square in a lobby survives on a 3000 pixel file.

Square art has a specific weakness worth planning around. On a rectangle you can push a headline toward the long axis and still leave breathing room. On a square, every edge is equally close to the center, so text that felt safe on screen crowds all four sides in print. Keep type and logos at least half an inch inside the trim up to 18 inches, and a full inch beyond that, then check the layout at actual size rather than fit-to-window.

Source files matter more here than on any other format, because square crops usually come from social exports. Instagram serves 1080 x 1080, which is 7.2 inches at 150 ppi. Go back to the camera original. A 12 megapixel phone photo is 4032 x 3024, and the square you crop from it is 3024 x 3024, good for a 20 inch print at full resolution. Upscaling past that adds pixels without adding detail, and canvas texture hides it better than semi gloss paper does.

Start from a correctly sized layout in the blank template library, or build one in the online design templates if you would rather change colors and copy than set up a document. The big poster resolution guide goes further into how far a file stretches before it breaks.

The Material Decides Where the Square Can Hang

Size sets the price. Material sets whether the poster survives the room. Square posters print on 10 stocks: 10mil semi gloss and hi gloss paper, 32# bright white uncoated, semi gloss and gloss canvas, 13oz smooth blockout vinyl, permanent and removable white adhesive-backed vinyl, 10mil backlit film, and 7mil weatherproof polypropylene.

Work backward from the wall. Indoors on a dry wall, semi gloss paper gives the sharpest photographic result and canvas gives it texture. In a window, removable adhesive vinyl sticks straight to the glass and peels off clean at the end of the promotion. In a lightbox, only backlit film spreads light evenly, and a paper poster in the same box goes blotchy. Outdoors, the 7mil weatherproof polypropylene is the one that holds through sun and rain. Blockout vinyl exists for a specific case: a double-sided hanging square where the back image would otherwise ghost through the front.

Lamination is the other half of the decision. Up to five options are available, from none through single and double sided 3 mil gloss, and it earns its cost on anything that gets handled, wiped, or moved between events. A laminated poster starts at $25, the same entry point as an unlaminated one, because the price moves with size and stock rather than the finish. For a side-by-side on stocks, read which poster material to use.

Framing and Hanging a Square Without Overpaying

Framed poster printed by 4OVER4 in a finished frame ready to hang

The awkward truth about square posters is that the frame industry does not really serve them. Retail frames come in rectangular openings because that is what cameras and paper sizes produce, so a 16 x 16 or 20 x 20 print sends you to a custom framer, and the frame routinely costs several times what the print did. The only square that is easy to shop for is 12 x 12, because record sleeve frames are made in that exact size.

There are three cheaper ways out. Mount it: mounted posters from $39.99 bond the print to a rigid board so it hangs flat and bare, which suits offices, shops and anything that gets moved. Print it on canvas: square canvas prints from $59 come stretched 1.5 inches deep over a wooden frame in a gallery wrap that carries the image around the edge, or a museum wrap with a clean white or black border, and they go straight onto a hook. Or buy the frame with the print: framed posters from $87.86 arrive finished, which removes the trip to the framer entirely.

If the square is one of several pieces, plan the grid before you order. Equal squares in a three-by-three block read as one work and forgive slightly uneven spacing, while mixed sizes need a shared center line to look deliberate. Our guide to arranging a poster gallery wall without nails covers the layout and the damage-free hanging, and the rest of the range sits on poster printing.

Wally sizes up a square

Type both numbers and the poster stops being a rectangle

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, measuring a square poster with a ruler and drawing the largest square inside a taller rectangular sheet

Wally holds a ruler against an 18 by 24 sheet and marks the biggest square it hides, 18 by 18. Every preset works the same way, so the short side is your ceiling. Want 24 by 24 or 36 by 36? He skips the preset list, types both numbers into the custom size field, and the press prints it up to 48 by 96 inches. Then he multiplies the inches by 150 to check the file is big enough, because a 1080 pixel social crop only carries about 7 inches of square.

Common Questions

Your square poster questions, answered

What is the most common square poster size?

12 x 12 inches, because it matches a vinyl record sleeve and because a 12 inch square is the largest print most people can hang without touching a stud or a hook rail. Above that, 18 x 18 and 24 x 24 are the two that come up most in retail and event work. Below it, 8 x 8 is a desk or shelf print rather than a wall piece.

Can I order a 24 x 24 inch poster at 4OVER4.COM?

Yes. It is not one of the 14 presets, so you choose the custom size option on the square posters configurator and enter 24 by 24. The custom field accepts any dimension up to 48 x 96 inches, and the price updates live before checkout because it is calculated from the area and the material rather than picked off a size list.

What resolution does a square poster need?

Multiply the finished inches by 150 and you have the pixel dimensions to aim for. A 16 x 16 poster wants 2400 x 2400 pixels, a 24 x 24 wants 3600 x 3600, a 36 x 36 wants 5400 x 5400. You can drop to 100 ppi on anything that gets read from more than about eight feet away, which is how a 30 inch square from a 3000 pixel file still looks clean on a lobby wall.

Will an Instagram photo print as a square poster?

Only small. Instagram serves images at 1080 x 1080, which is 7.2 inches at 150 ppi and about 10.8 inches at 100 ppi. Go back to the original camera file instead. A 12 megapixel phone photo is 4032 x 3024, and the square you crop out of it is 3024 x 3024, enough for a 20 inch square at full resolution.

Do square posters fit standard frames?

Rarely. Frame shops and big box retailers stock rectangular openings, so a 16 x 16 or 20 x 20 print means a custom frame, which usually costs more than the poster did. The cheaper routes are a mounted poster from $39.99, which is bonded to a rigid board and hangs bare, or square canvas prints from $59, which arrive stretched over a 1.5 inch wooden frame with no external frame needed.

Are square posters more expensive than rectangular ones?

Per square inch, no. Square posters at 4OVER4.COM start at $25 and the price is driven by finished area and material, so a 16 x 16 square and a 16 x 20 rectangle on the same stock sit close together, with the rectangle costing slightly more because it is larger. What raises the bill on a square is the framing and the stock, not the shape.
