What the Round Shape Actually Changes on the Container
The round cut buys you one durability advantage and hands you one hard limit, and both are worth knowing before you commit a run.
The advantage is that a circle has no corner. Peeling starts at a corner nearly every time, because a corner is the one place where a fingernail, a shelf edge or a sleeve can get under the film and lever. Take the corners off and the same adhesive on the same face stock holds longer on a jar that gets picked up, put down and wiped. This is why lid seals and bottle cap marks are round almost everywhere you look, not because of fashion.
The limit is curvature, and it catches people out. A flat label bends happily in one direction, so it wraps a straight bottle wall or a cylindrical tin with no complaint. It cannot bend in two directions at once. A domed cap, a bottle shoulder, the crown of a spray bottle: those surfaces curve along two axes, and a circle laid across them has to stretch in the middle or bunch at the rim. What you get is a label with a tented edge that lifts within a week. If the surface is domed, either go much smaller so the circle only covers the flat center, or move to a die cut shape with slits designed to sit over the curve.
Coverage is the other quiet difference. A 2 inch circle carries about 3.1 square inches of printable face against 4 square inches on a 2 by 2 inch square, so the round version gives up roughly a fifth of the area for the same footprint. Most people assume the roll is the bulk option and the sheet is the small one. The pricing says something different, and it is worth reading before you order 500 of anything.

One practical detail people forget on their first roll order: the unwind position. You choose whether the top, bottom, left or right of the artwork comes off the roll first, and an applicator that expects one orientation will fight a roll wound the other way. Materials, Water, and Artwork That Cuts Clean
Five faces on the sheet product, and the price steps between them are large enough to be a real decision. Standard Uncoated is the base and takes a pen, which is what you want on a stock or date label. Semi-gloss runs about 23 percent over it, hi-gloss about 40 percent, Standard White Vinyl about 110 percent and Standard Clear about 155 percent. Black ink only takes about 10 percent back off, which on a run of 5,000 seal dots is not nothing.
The rule that saves the most money is simple: paper for anything dry, film for anything wet. Uncoated and gloss faces are paper, and paper on a chilled bottle absorbs the condensation, greys out and eventually releases. Candle wax, essential oils and hand cream do the same job more slowly. White vinyl and clear are synthetic, so they take the moisture and the wipe. For artwork, build the file at the cut diameter, push the background 1/8 inch past it all the way around, and hold type and logos 1/8 inch inside. That 1/4 inch total is more important on a circle than on a rectangle, because a die that wanders shows the wander round the whole edge instead of on one side. Center the design properly as well: the eye reads an off center circle instantly, in a way it forgives on a square. Both leave a thin ring of metal showing, which is what you want, because a label cut to the exact lid diameter has nowhere to go if it lands a millimeter off center and the edge then overhangs the rim and catches. Is a round label the same thing as a circle sticker?

Circles are less forgiving than rectangles because a die that drifts by a hair shows the drift the whole way around rather than on one edge.
