Question
Which should I adjust first - tracking or kerning?
Answer
Set tracking first, then kern. Working in that order keeps your fine adjustments from being wiped out.
- Start with tracking to establish the overall spacing tone across the word, line, or block.
- Then kern the individual pairs that still look uneven, such as AV, To, or Wa.
- Avoid changing tracking after kerning, since a global shift undoes your manual pair fixes.
- Review everything at the actual print size before you finalize.
