Question

Is lenticular printing more expensive than standard printing?

Answer

Yes. Lenticular printing costs more per unit than standard flat printing because it uses a specialty lens material plus a precise interlacing and alignment process that flat printing does not require. The upside is that the per-piece price drops steadily as your quantity climbs, so larger runs close much of the gap.

  • Lens material: the ribbed lenticular lens is a specialty plastic that costs more than paper stock.
  • Image interlacing: two or more frames are sliced and woven together so the image shifts as the viewing angle changes.
  • Registration: the printed interlace has to line up under the lens with tight tolerance, which adds setup time.
  • Quantity breaks: setup is a fixed cost, so ordering more pieces lowers the price of each one.

Because lenticular pieces move and catch the eye, people tend to keep and share them longer than a flat card, which is where the added cost usually earns its keep.
