Question
How small can debossed text or details be?
Answer
Debossing rewards bold, simple artwork and struggles with very fine detail, because the die has to physically press each element into the paper. Small or delicate features can lose definition.
- Text size: keep type at about 10pt or larger so letters stay clean and readable
- Line weight: lines thinner than roughly 1pt may not hold a clear impression
- Detail: simplify intricate elements, since tight detail can fill in or flatten
- Spacing: give elements a little breathing room so the die does not blur them together
If your design includes fine detail, a prepress review can suggest adjustments during proofing so the debossed result stays crisp.
