Question
How do I set up my files for binding?
Answer
Each binding method has its own margin and bleed needs, so the safest approach is to set up your file for the specific method before you design around the edges. Get the interior clearances right and the finished piece reads cleanly.
| Binding | Setup requirement |
|---|---|
| Perfect binding | Wider inner margins so text clears the glued spine |
| Spiral and Wire-O | Extra clearance on the bound edge for punch holes |
| Saddle stitch | Even page counts and mind the creep on inner pages |
- Add bleed: include 0.125 inch of bleed on all sides so trimming leaves no white edges.
- Keep text safe: hold important text away from the bound edge and the trim.
- Use a template: a binding-specific template removes the guesswork on margins and hole placement.
