Question
How should I set up my artwork files for specialty finishes?
Answer
Specialty finishes need a little extra file prep, because the press has to know exactly where the effect goes. The rule is simple: put the finish on its own layer so it can be separated from your regular CMYK artwork.
- Create a separate spot-color layer or channel just for the finish.
- For foil, build a 100% solid mask that marks every foiled shape.
- For spot UV, add a dedicated UV mask layer over the areas you want coated.
- Name the spot color clearly and use a bright, obvious color so it is easy to see.
- Keep the finish art on top of your CMYK art, aligned exactly.
- Start from a blank template with bleed and safe zones already built in, and export a layered, print-ready PDF.
