Question

How do I set up bleed and safe zones for printing?

Answer

Bleed and safe zones keep your artwork clean after the piece is trimmed, so nothing important gets cut off and no white edges appear.

  • Bleed: extend the background 0.0625 in (1/16 in) past the trim line on every side
  • Trim line: where the piece is actually cut
  • Safe zone: keep text and logos 0.125 in (1/8 in) inside the trim
  • This applies to every product, from business cards to banners

The easiest way to get it right is to start from a blank template, which already has these guides placed.
