Does paper weight affect how my CMYK colors look?
Answer
Weight itself has very little direct impact on color. What actually changes how your CMYK values look is the paper's finish and coating, which are easy to confuse with thickness.
- Weight (thickness): affects stiffness and durability, not hue. A 14pt and a 16pt card with the same finish print nearly identical color.
- Coated / glossy: keeps ink on the surface, so colors look brighter and more vivid.
- Uncoated / matte: absorbs more ink, producing softer, slightly darker tones.
