Question
Can I print full-color photographs with letterpress?
Answer
No. Letterpress is not designed for photographic reproduction. It shines with solid colors, line art, and typography, but the fine detail in photos does not survive the process.
- Great for: bold type, logos, line art, and solid blocks of one or two colors.
- Not suited to: halftone dots and gradients, which lose clarity as the plate presses into the paper.
- A workaround: pair a letterpress cover or panel with digitally printed interior pages when your project needs photos.
If your design depends on full-color imagery, a digital process will hold the detail far better than letterpress can.
