Can you write on UV-coated business cards?

Not on a fully UV-coated surface. UV coating cures into a hard, non-porous shine, so standard ballpoint and gel inks bead up, smear, or never fully dry. If you expect to write on your cards, plan for it in the design stage.

• For a writable zone, use spot UV so only chosen areas get the gloss and the rest stays uncoated and pen-friendly.
• Leave appointment lines, note fields, or the whole back uncoated so ink adheres cleanly.
• Uncoated or matte-only stock takes pen ink reliably if you need to write across the full card.
• A common setup is a coated, branded front paired with an uncoated back for handwritten notes.

This gives you glossy accents where they impress and functional space where you actually need to write.
