About the qr code generator

The same generator the main site uses. Pick what the code does, style it, download it, and sign in to save it and keep a dynamic one pointing wherever you want.

A static QR code lasts forever but can never be changed; a dynamic one can be repointed after it is printed. On print, make it at least 0.8 in across, keep it dark on light, and leave the quiet zone clear.

Static against dynamic

A static code has the address baked into the pattern. It works forever, needs nothing from us, and can never be changed. If the page moves, five thousand printed cards point at a dead link.

A dynamic code points at 4OVER4 and we forward the scan. The printed pattern never changes but the destination can, and you get the scan counts. It needs an account, because the code belongs to you.

How small can a QR code be on print

About 0.8 inches across on something held in the hand, and bigger on anything read from further away. The rule of thumb is that the code should be at least a tenth of the distance it will be scanned from: two feet away wants two and a half inches.

Leave the quiet zone, the clear margin all round, and do not put the code across a fold or a crease. Raise the error correction to Q or H if there is a logo in the middle, because those dots have to be readable from what is left.

Contrast, and which way round

Dark code on a light background. Scanners look for dark on light, and a light code on a dark card fails on a lot of phones however good it looks. If the design demands it, test it on several phones before the run, not after.

Common questions

Questions about free qr code generator

Is this QR code generator free?

Yes, and the codes never expire. An account is only needed to save a code or to make a dynamic one.

What is a dynamic QR code?

A code that points at 4OVER4 and forwards the scan. The printed pattern never changes but you can change the destination later and see the scan counts.

How small can a QR code be?

About 0.8 in across for something held in the hand. As a rule, make it at least a tenth of the distance it will be scanned from.

Can I put my logo in the middle?

Yes, and raise the error correction to Q or H when you do, so the code still reads from the dots that remain.

Can I change the colours?

Yes: the code, the background, a fade to a second colour, the dot shape, the corners and a frame. Keep it dark on light or some phones will not read it.
