A pet portrait fails when the painting is lovely and the animal is somebody else's. The markings, the eye colour and the set of the ears are the whole point, so the tool is told to keep them exactly and change only the medium.
A sharp, well-lit photo taken at the animal's eye level gives much the best result. A dark photo from above gives you a painting of a shadow.
What to print it on
Canvas is the obvious one and looks like a painting because the weave breaks up the surface. The same portrait also works on a card for a pet's birthday, on a mug, and small on a sticker.
