The everyday folding carton: four walls, a tuck flap at the top and a glue tab down one side.

This is geometry, not a guess: the panels are your width and depth repeated round the box, the flaps are sized from the depth, and the glue tab is the overlap. Solid lines are where the blade cuts and dashed lines are where the rule creases. Put your artwork on the panels and keep anything important 0.125 in clear of a fold, because ink cracks on a crease.

Board thickness is not in this drawing. A rigid box made from thick board needs a little more room on the tuck, so send us the dieline and the stock together and we confirm the die before it is cut.

A box is a flat sheet until the last second

Every folding carton starts as one flat piece of board, cut on the outline and creased on the folds. Getting the flat right is the whole job: the four walls go round in order, the flaps come off the top and bottom, and one glue tab overlaps the first wall.

That is arithmetic, not artistry, which is why a tool can draw it exactly. Solid lines are where the blade cuts and dashed lines are where the rule creases.

Keep the artwork off the creases

Ink cracks on a fold, and a logo that straddles a crease will show a white line the first time the box is opened. Keep anything that has to look crisp 0.125 in clear of a dashed line, and let backgrounds run across instead.

What the drawing leaves out

Board thickness. A carton made from thin card folds almost exactly on the line, and a rigid box from thick board needs a little more room on the tuck or it will not close. Send us the dieline and the stock together and we confirm the die before anything is cut.

Common questions

Questions about box template generator

What is a dieline?

The flat outline of a box before it is folded, with the cut lines and the fold lines marked. It is what a die is made from.

Which box style should I pick?

A tuck-top carton is the everyday folding box, with four walls, a tuck flap and a glue tab. A sleeve is a band with no top or bottom that slides over a tray or another box.

Does it allow for board thickness?

No, and that matters on thick board. Send us the dieline with the stock you want and we confirm the die.

What file do I get?

A PDF at the true flat size and an SVG, both with cut lines solid and fold lines dashed.
