The finish, decoded: a moving shine versus a flip
Tilt the two side by side and the difference is plain. On a holographic sticker the artwork stays put and the shine slides across it. On a 3D lenticular sticker the artwork itself changes, because two or more images are cut into thin interlaced strips and a ridged lens sends a different strip to your eye at each angle.
That is why the two ask such different things of a design. The holographic finish rewards one strong image with clean shapes for the light to play on. The lenticular finish rewards a before and after: a closed box and an open one, a logo and a product, a question and its answer. Material and feel: a thin film against a stiff lens
Holographic stickers print as roll labels on four stocks: white gloss for indoor use, white or clear BOPP for indoor and outdoor use, and a bright shiny silver metallic foil. Clear BOPP lets the surface show through around the art, which suits glass and colored packaging. Rounded 1/8 inch corners are an option on the rectangles.
A lenticular sticker is built differently. The lens is a real layer on top of the print, so the sticker is stiffer and sits best on flat faces where the strips line up with your eye. Cost and quantity: what each effect does to the budget
The two price ladders start in different places. Holographic opens with one flat price for any run up to 500, then steps down per sticker as the run grows, to 10,000 for $839.93. Lenticular opens at 500 and runs to 10,000 for $3,294.03, about 33 cents a sticker at that size.
The gap pays for the lens and for lining it up with the interlaced print underneath. If your artwork is one fixed image, that money buys nothing the viewer can see, so holographic is the sensible pick. Where each one earns its place
Holographic stickers do the everyday premium jobs: product labels, packaging seals and bottle wraps, in sizes that include a 1 by 2.625 inch address label and wraps for water bottles. Because they come on rolls, a shop that labels by hand and a line that labels by machine can both use them.
Lenticular stickers are the piece people play with. A design that flips between two or more states turns a sticker into a small toy, which suits a collectible, a limited drop or the inside of a box lid. Design: one crisp file versus a set of images
A holographic sticker needs one print-ready file, the same as any standard sticker. Keep fine detail out of the areas where the shine is strongest, and set any small text in a solid color so it stays readable as the light moves.
A lenticular sticker needs one file per image, all at the same size, with the key shapes in the same place on each so the flip reads as a change rather than a jumble. Decide the direction early: a left to right flip works when the sticker will be passed from hand to hand, a top to bottom flip when people walk past it. How many images can a lenticular sticker flip between?
Two, three or four. You choose the number of flips and the direction, top to bottom or left to right, and each image needs its own file at the final size. With four images each one gets a thinner share of the lens, so bold shapes and large type carry the change best.
Why do 100 and 500 holographic stickers cost the same?
The first price tier covers any run up to 500, so ordering 500 instead of 100 adds nothing to the bill. The next step is 1,000 for $380.66, which brings each sticker under 40 cents.
Can holographic stickers go on a labeling machine?
Yes. They come on 3 inch cores, and you choose hand or machine application and which edge of the copy dispenses first, so a labeler feeds them the right way round. You also tell us the surface: paper or corrugated, plastic, wood, metal, glass or frozen product.
