What is the standard margin of error for cutting on print orders?
Answer
Cutting is precise but not perfect. The printing industry allows a 1/16 inch tolerance in either direction, so designs should account for that small possible shift.
- Standard cutting tolerance: about 1/16" of movement.
- Keep borders, text, and images at least 1/16" from the edge, ideally more.
- Thin borders are risky, because a slight shift makes them look uneven.
- Careful cutting minimizes movement, but staying inside the margin guarantees nothing important is lost.
