Can spot UV be applied to standard flat labels?
Answer
Spot UV is a clear gloss coating applied to selected areas of a printed piece so those spots stand out against a matte or uncoated background. It can be used on many flat labels and stickers, but whether it works comes down to the stock and finish you choose.
- Works best on coated, laminated, or matte-finish label stocks that give the gloss something to sit against.
- Uncoated or heavily textured materials may not hold a crisp spot UV edge.
- Spot UV needs its own mask file: a separate layer (usually 100% K or a named spot color) marking exactly where the gloss goes.
- Keep spot UV elements slightly inside the trim so registration shifts do not push the gloss off the edge.
- It adds a raised, tactile feel to logos, icons, or text without changing the ink color underneath.
Because coating options differ by material and size, confirm spot UV support for the exact stock and dimensions before you finalize your artwork.
