Answer
For a large-format poster, build the file at the final print size and export a print-ready PDF so the press reproduces it cleanly with no scaling surprises.

Very large prints viewed from a distance can be built at a lower effective resolution, down to around 150 DPI at final size, without looking soft. Match your DPI to the viewing distance, keep close-up pieces near 300 DPI, and confirm any size-specific requirements before you export.
