What is scoring?

Scoring is the process of putting a crease in the paper to make folding easier. It is done on cardstock because thicker paper is too stiff to fold cleanly and can crack along the fold without a score first. You need it whenever a piece on heavy stock will be folded; flat pieces that never fold do not require it.

• What it does: presses a shallow channel into the sheet so the fibers fold along a clean, straight line instead of splitting.
• Why cardstock needs it: heavy stock cracks and flakes at the fold if it is not scored first.
• When it is required: cover stock 14pt or heavier that will be folded should always be scored.
• Result: a smoother fold with no cracking and a more professional finish.
• Common on: folded cards, brochures, and covers.
