How can I find the DPI of my artwork?
Answer
DPI, or dots per inch, refers to the resolution setting of your artwork, and it tells you how much detail an image holds at its printed size. In Photoshop you can open Image and then Image Size to see the resolution box, which shows the dpi along with the pixel dimensions.
- Check it in Photoshop: go to Image and Image Size to read the current resolution.
- Aim for 300 dpi at final size: that is the standard for crisp printed detail.
- Resolution depends on size: the same image can be 300 dpi when small and drop below 150 dpi when enlarged.
- Low dpi cannot be faked: increasing dpi on a small image will not add detail that was never captured.
