Yes, heavier stocks can crack along a fold if they are not scored first. Scoring presses a shallow groove into the sheet so the fibers bend cleanly instead of splitting or flaking.
- Stocks around 12pt and up usually need scoring before folding
- Coated and laminated papers crack more easily than uncoated, so score them
- Always score first, then fold, to avoid a rough or peeling edge
