What paper thickness works best for embossing printing?
Answer
Thicker stocks give the most dramatic embossed results, because a heavier sheet has the body to hold a deep, crisp raised impression without cracking. As a rule, use 16pt and above.
- 16pt is the recommended minimum for a clean emboss.
- 32pt, roughly three times the thickness of a standard business card, holds the raised impression beautifully and feels substantial in hand.
- The heavier the stock, the more pronounced and durable the embossed effect.

The same rule holds for debossing: 24pt gives strong, clean impressions and 32pt the deepest, while thin sheets can warp or tear under the die. A 14pt stock takes only a light emboss. Cotton and uncoated stocks are especially good, because their fibers compress and hold the shape.
