Question

Should I use CMYK for a design that will be used both online and in print?

Answer

The cleanest approach is to keep two versions of the file, one tuned for each medium. Print wants CMYK so colors match the ink range, and web wants RGB so colors stay bright on screen.

  • Build and export your print file in CMYK.
  • Build or export your digital file in RGB.
  • If you only have time for one master, start in CMYK for print, then convert a copy to RGB for the web.
  • Converting CMYK to RGB is less destructive than the reverse, since RGB can hold the narrower CMYK range without clipping.
