Question
How far from the edge should the hole be placed?
Answer
Keep the center of the hole at least 0.25 inches from any trimmed edge. That margin prevents the paper from tearing out toward the edge and gives the finished hole a clean, professional look.
- Hole center to trim edge: 0.25 inches minimum.
- Text and logos to the hole: keep important elements at least 0.25 inches from the hole's outer edge so nothing gets clipped.
- Heavier stock gives a little more forgiveness, but the 0.25 inch rule is a safe default across weights.
Building this clearance into your artwork from the start avoids a common cause of reprints, which is a hole punched too close to the edge or over a key part of the design.
