Do I need special file setup for specialty printing?
Answer
Yes. Effects like foil and spot UV need a separate layer or mask that tells the press exactly where to apply them, on top of your normal color file.
- Add a dedicated mask layer for each special effect (foil, spot UV, and so on).
- Fill mask areas with solid black (100% K) or a named spot color.
- Keep the mask on its own layer, separate from your CMYK artwork.
- Use a template for the specific product so trim, bleed, and mask register correctly.
- Review a proof before production so any setup issues get caught early.
Some printers ask for separate files instead of layers: one file with only the CMYK artwork and one with only the foil or spot UV areas, in a flat contrasting color. Setup varies by product, so follow the artwork specifications for the product you order.
